EAN webinar on optimizing radiation protection in NORM management
Promoted by the European ALARA Network (EAN), the webinar explores the practical optimization of radiation protection in industrial processes involving NORM and proper residue management. Speakers Kateřina Navrátilová Rovenská (SURO, Czech Republic) and Federica Leonardi (INAIL, Italy) will present a comparative analysis of the approaches adopted in Italy and the Czech Republic, respectively, addressing national regulatory frameworks, radiological characterization guidelines, and dose assessment methodologies for workers and the public. By comparing these national perspectives, the webinar offers insights into how the ALARA/optimization principle can help address practical NORM management challenges.
H. Burçin Okyar (IAEA) will provide an update on the ORPNET, of which the EAN is an active participating organization, highlighting opportunities for further collaboration between EAN and the IAEA in advancing occupational radiation protection. The presentation will also provide an overview of the IAEA’s ongoing activities related to NORM, including the implementation of the GSR Part 3, the development of training and capacity-building initiatives, and the promotion of international experience exchange through ORPNET and the NORM symposium series. In addition, recent IAEA publications and guidance relevant to natural sources of radiation and worker protection will be presented, together with current efforts to strengthen radiation protection frameworks and optimize occupational exposure management in industrial processes involving NORM.
