Critical observations from the UN Glasgow Climate Change Conference and the place of nuclear in the discussion

Reports from COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow have been mixed. Some say important progress was made while others think it was a political show of empty words. Time to critically reflect on what was discussed and agreed at COP26, and on what that means for the future. Our specific topic of interest is how nuclear energy has been on and off stage in these negotiations. For all this, SHARE organises an online dialogue between an ethicist, Mr. Gaston Meskens, and a political scientist, Prof. Joost de Moor, who were both present in Glasgow. Opening and closing remarks will be delivered by the SHARE President, Prof. Susan Molyneux-Hodgson.

Gaston Meskens works part-time with the Science and Technology Studies group of the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK•CEN and with the Centre for Ethics and Value Inquiry of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the University of Ghent. He has built up more than twenty years of experience in participative and transdisciplinary research related to the ethics of governance of issues such as sustainable development, energy, climate change and radioactive waste management. Since 2006, he is member of the steering committee of the constituency that represents the global scientific world in the United Nations Climate Change negotiation process.
Joost de Moor is Assistant Professor in Political Science at SciencesPo Paris. His work focuses on the various ways in which citizens concerned about the environment become politically active – individually or collectively – to address their concerns. In particular, he focuses on the ways in which environmental activists navigate a political context marked by the apparent inability of states and international organizations to address crises like climate change, focusing on the strategic dilemmas involved in that. He has published on these topics in journals across fields of political sciences, sociology and urban studies, including in Environmental Politics, Theory & Society, and International Journal of Urban and Regional Research.
