SUMMARY:SRP webinar: The Palomares Accident - 60 years later
DESCRIPTION:Free SRP Webinar:  \nThe Palomares Accident – 60 years later\n25 February 2026 12:00 – 13:00 (GMT) \n\n\nThe Palomares accident occurred on 17 January 1966\, when two US military planes\, a B-52 bomber and a KC-135 tanker aircraft\, collided in the process of a midair refuelling operation above the town of Palomares\, in the southeast of Spain on the Mediterranean coast. Both aircrafts were destroyed in the air. Four thermonuclear weapons\, 11 men (four survived)\, and hundreds of tons of debris fell to earth in and around the town. Two weapons landed without incident\, and both were recovered undamaged. But the parachutes of the other two weapons failed to deploy\, and the high explosives in these last two weapons detonated and burned\, causing some of the plutonium inside to also burn spreading plutonium contamination throughout the area. Plutonium particulate contamination was distributed in varying degrees over a 2.26 km2 area including the northern edge of the village\, farmlands and non-cultivated terrain. \nThe seminar will describe the accident and the recovery operations\, with the initial land decontamination\, and the long-term follow-up with a Radiological Surveillance Programme (RSP)\, including the affected population. It will also present the more recent characterization of the contamination distribution\, the currently condemned areas and plans for a total restoration of the affected sites\, with the adopted radiological criteria. The interaction with the affected communities\, the local and regional authorities\, as well as with other stakeholders are also commented.

SUMMARY:Joint ICRP & NPO Fukushima Dialogue Webinar
DESCRIPTION:15th Anniversary of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident: Testimonies on the Past\, Present\, and Future\nThis year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. From 2011 to 2019\, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) continuously organised the Fukushima Dialogue meetings in Fukushima. Since 2019\, the organisation of the Dialogues has been taken over by the non-profit organisation Fukushima Dialogue\, which was established by participants in Fukushima. \nThe main aim of this initiative was to establish a dialogue between experts and stakeholders in affected areas to identify the problems and the challenges they are confronted with and to express their expectations\, particularly as regard the human dimension affected by the accident. These dialogues have significantly contributed to the development of the co-expertise process of the recovery of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. As time has passed\, radiation levels have gradually decreased\, daily life has regained a degree of stability\, and protective measures have become routine. At the same time\, however\, evacuation zones still remain\, severe population decline persists\, and there are areas where radiation levels are relatively high. The impacts of the accident therefore continue to be strongly felt. In addition\, new challenges have emerged in the course of the recovery process itself. \nThis webinar aims to share the current situation in Fukushima fifteen years after the nuclear accident\, as well as expectation and challenges for the future\, through testimonies from residents.

SUMMARY:SRP webinar: Teaching AI the Laws of Physics – Paradigm Shift in Radiation Protection
DESCRIPTION:Free SRP Webinar:  \nTeaching AI the Laws of Physics – Paradigm Shift in Radiation Protection\n12 March 2026 12:00 – 13:00 (BST) \n\n\nAs Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into the physical world\, its application within nuclear safety–critical domains has come under heightened scrutiny. While AI has demonstrated considerable effectiveness in perception-based tasks—such as processing data\, images\, patterns\, and speech—its deployment in nuclear safety applications presents significant challenges. In particular\, the data-driven and often opaque “black box” nature of conventional AI systems limits their ability to provide transparent\, auditable rationales for their outputs. This lack of explainability raises regulatory and industry concerns\, as it may introduce unknown or unacceptable safety risks if AI-generated recommendations are implemented without sufficient understanding or validation. \nTo address these challenges\, an emerging field of research is focused on the development of Explainable and Physics-Informed Artificial Intelligence. In this approach\, AI models are explicitly constrained and guided by the Laws of Physics\, system dynamics\, and governing equations embedded directly within the neural network architecture. This paradigm supports the development of trustworthy AI systems that are capable of delivering accurate\, rapid\, robust\, and interpretable solutions while remaining consistent with established physical principles. \nThis presentation will describe the methodology and challenges associated with training AI systems to recognise\, respect\, and enforce physical laws when formulating predictions and decisions. It will demonstrate how Physics-Informed AI can transform radiation protection by ensuring that AI outputs remain physically plausible and scientifically defensible\, thereby improving accuracy\, reliability\, and interpretability in complex and safety-critical environments. Finally\, emerging applications across nuclear and environmental safety\, as well as medical physics\, will be discussed\, highlighting the potential of this approach to support regulatory acceptance and operational deployment.

SUMMARY:NVS-Voorjaarssymposium ‘Nucleaire dreiging’
SUMMARY:ICRP webinar: radiological protection in surface and near-surface disposal of solid radioactive waste
DESCRIPTION:ICRP Task Group 97 has recently published ICRP Publication 159: Radiological Protection in Surface and Near-surface Disposal of Solid Radioactive Waste. This webinar addresses important points of the report through presentations by Task Group members. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate through a moderated Q&A session.  \nParticipants who attend at least 50% of the workshop will receive a Certificate of Attendance via email within 48 hours of the event. \n\nPublication Abstract\nThis publication provides an update of the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection for application of the fundamental radiological protection principles for the disposal of radioactive waste in a surface and near-surface disposal facility. The goal of a surface and near-surface disposal system is to provide protection of humans and the environment from the hazards associated with the radioactive waste suitable to the prevailing circumstances. Application of the ICRP System of Radiological Protection for a surface and near-surface disposal facility includes justification of the practice generating the waste\, and is considered in the context of a planned exposure situation. The design basis for the facility considers the potential for exposures to humans and the environment associated with its expected evolution\, taking into account reasonably foreseeable faults. Optimisation of protection is an iterative\, systematic\, and transparent evaluation of protective options to reduce the impacts to humans and the environment. Optimisation is essential throughout all life phases\, and is of particular importance in the design phase\, as this will determine the performance of the facility in the operational and post-closure phases. To deal with the distant future and low-probability scenarios\, optimisation has to be complemented by aspects such as robustness\, defence in depth\, etc. to provide assurance that reasonable steps have been taken to maintain the long-term integrity of the facility. In the case of severe natural disruptive events or human intrusion beyond the design basis\, application of the ICRP System of Radiological Protection should be considered with reference to existing exposure situations. Due to the nature of the hazards and associated time scales\, the fundamental strategy adopted for the disposal of low- and very-low-level radioactive waste is: to contain and isolate the waste until the short-lived radionuclides have decayed to levels that can no longer give rise to significant exposures; and to limit the activity content of longer-lived radionuclides to ensure that doses and risk are also limited in the long term\, when containment and isolation capacities may be diminishing. The successful implementation of this strategy is demonstrated through a structured safety case. The specific options for a surface and near- surface disposal facility will depend upon the particular situation\, including the nature of the waste\, the local physical environment\, and the societal context. Dialogue between the operator\, regulator\, and stakeholders should be established as early as possible in the process\, with the inclusion of ethical values to help contribute to promoting a shared understanding of the application of the ICRP System of Radiological Protection. \n

SUMMARY:IRPA Refresher webinar: the evolution of shielding
DESCRIPTION:Topical area: occupational radiation protection of for medical professionals \n“Radiation shielding in interventional radiology: wearable lead\, devices and barriers Hannah Scott-Rees”\nBy Dr. Hannah Scott (Velindre Cancer Centre\, Cardiff\, United Kingdom) \n  \nFor decades\, heavy lead aprons have been the standard for radiation protection in interventional labs\, contributing significantly to a high incidence of orthopaedic injuries among medical staff. This webinar explores the suite of radiation protection options\, driven by innovations that prioritize operator safety and ergonomics. We will examine the efficacy of modern\, non-wearable solutions\, including ceiling-suspended shielding systems\, radiation protection cabins\, and robotic-assisted platforms that remove the operator from the radiation field entirely. Additionally\, we will discuss the role of lightweight\, lead-alternative composite materials and radiation protection culture. The session will conclude by comparing these technologies\, highlighting how combining various types of protection is creating a safer\, more sustainable career path for interventional specialists. \nLearning Objectives \nAfter following this webinar\, participants will be able to \nDescribe the Occupational Risks: Articulate the primary ergonomic and health hazards\, specifically orthopaedic injuries\, associated with the long-term use of traditional lead aprons in interventional labs. \nIdentify Key Technologies: Identify and differentiate between the major categories of modern radiation protection technologies\, including lead-alternative composite materials\, structural shielding systems (suspended and cabin-based)\, and robotic-assisted platforms. \nExplain Protective Mechanisms: Explain the mechanism of action for non-wearable shielding systems and how they effectively reduce operator radiation dose without imposing physical strain. \nCompare and Contrast Solutions: Compare the advantages and disadvantages of various “lead-free” solutions\, considering factors such as radiation protection efficacy\, operator mobility\, capital cost\, and impact on procedural workflow. \nEvaluate for Implementation: Evaluate the critical factors a clinical department should consider when developing a strategy to improve radiation protection\, ensuring a comprehensive approach to radiation safety. \n  \nAnnouncement flyer \nRegistration \n

SUMMARY:SRP webinar: New Clearance and Exemption Guidance
DESCRIPTION:Free SRP Webinar:  \nNew Clearance and Exemption Guidance\n16 April 2026 12:00 – 13:00 (BST) \n\n\nIn 2023 the IAEA published two new guidance documents\, one on Clearance and one on Exemption. These documents explain the application of the principles of exemption and clearance in more detail. They also give guidance on the derivation of exemption and clearance levels for specific situations\, for example surface contaminated objects. Importantly\, they do not change the general exemption and clearance levels which are specified in the 2014 IAEA Basic Safety Standards and the 2013 EC Basic Safety Standards. IAEA is currently developing a methodology for calculating specific clearance levels for different materials e.g.\, for metals for recycling\, for concrete for recycling\, for combustibles for incineration\, and for landfill disposal of contaminated slags and dust. Specific clearance is an important concept that directly supports a sustainable approach to decommissioning and clean-up. \nThis webinar describes the key concepts of exemption and clearance and the new IAEA guidance\, highlighting any implications for UK.
