SUMMARY:EAN Workshop: Optimization of radiation protection in design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop focusses on the optimization radiation protection in the design of nuclear applications. There is a significant potential to avoid radiation doses and reduce costs by considering radiation protection early in the design phase. A correct design process will lead to an optimized protecting of workers\, the public and the environment while fostering innovation. \nAs we are at a crossroads in the nuclear field where we see new developments of nuclear applications for energy production\, medical applications and research it is important to take stock of the experience gathered and to look how the ALARA principle can be applied practically in the design of new installations. \nAmong the new developments we see the rise of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)\, the development of advanced reactor technologies\, accelerators and next-generation facilities for medical applications from diagnostics and cancer treatment to meet the demands of a cleaner\, more sustainable future. \nThis workshop will bring together stakeholders from different fields to share experiences in implementing radiation protection in design and exchange ideas for further improvement. Whether we’re building reactors for power generation\, facilities for producing medical isotopes or research centers for cutting-edge innovations\, our shared goal remains the same: to ensure the safety and well-being of people and the environment. \nDuring the workshop we will: \n1. Examine the radiation protection challenges and opportunities in designing SMRs\, advanced reactors\, accelerators and facilities for the production of medical isotopes.\n2. Explore innovative strategies to embed the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle into design processes\, balancing technical feasibility\, economic considerations and societal expectations.\n3. Discuss case studies from new and existing installations\, highlighting best practices\, lessons learned and emerging solutions.\n4. Foster collaboration among experts from diverse fields\, including energy\, healthcare and research\, to ensure our efforts are aligned and impactful. \nBy the end of this workshop we will be equipped with actionable insights and inspired by the possibilities ahead. Whether we are revolutionizing energy systems\, advancing medical science or enabling future technologies\, radiation protection and the ALARA principle remain a cornerstone of our progress. \nThe workshop will take place in Tabloo (Dessel\, Belgium) from 22 to 24 April 2026.

SUMMARY:EAN webinar: Teaching tools and simulation for radiation protection training
DESCRIPTION:The first EAN webinar will take place on Monday\, 15 December 2025\, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm CET. \n Maxime HENRI\, from INSTN\, will present: Teaching Tools and Simulation for Radiation Protection Training. \nThis webinar will present the various educational and simulation tools that are available nowadays for radiation protection training. INSTN developed and owns several educational tools\, from training sites to virtual reality. These tools allow trainees to benefit from training situations that closely resembles the real-life conditions they will encounter in their work\, while controlling or even eliminating their exposure to ionising radiation. \n Register here: https://lnkd.in/ex_nbGzz \n

SUMMARY:EAN Workshop: Optimization of the transport of radioactive material
DESCRIPTION:More than 20 million packages of radioactive material are transported each year on public roads\, railways\, and ships\, worldwide. The shipments are related to three main sectors: non-nuclear industry and research\, the medical field\, and the nuclear industry.\n• Non-nuclear industry and research account of most transported packages\, often\nfor mobile equipment with radioactive sources like gamma radiography devices.\n• Medical uses make up another important part of shipped materials like\nradiopharmaceutical products for healthcare.\n• The nuclear industry is responsible for the remaining (~5%)\, supporting activities\nrelated to the fuel cycle stages. \nWorkers handling and shipping these radioactive matters\, as well as those near the transport vehicles\, may be exposed to ionizing radiation. People in the immediate vicinity\nof vehicles transporting (on site and off site) radioactive substances may also be exposed to ionizing radiation\, though to a lesser extent than workers. Regulations are in place to\nprotect workers\, the public\, and the environment from radiation. However\, it must be recognized that as said by Mr. Grossi (Director General IAEA) “transport is a crucial\nmoment: it’s when nuclear and radioactive materials are on the move\, before being able to reach their destination reliably and on time” [that mistakes and problems can arise\nmore easily]. \nConsequently\, it happens that incidents\, accidents and thefts occur because some transport operators still insufficiently account for security and radiation safety to workers and the public. For instance\, drivers transporting medical radioactive sources face higher exposure than those in other sectors (e.g. several events with individual exposures over 20 mSv/y have been reported in France recently). Thus\, companies involved in the transport of radioactive substances must create sustainable radiological protection programs and regimes outlining radiation safety measures and the\noptimization of occupational and public exposures (implementing the ALARA principle). \nThe national authorities must organize regular drills involving both regular and potential responders. Training and coaching of all those involved must be stepped up and is an essential element in improving the radiation protection culture. \nThe 21st EAN workshop this time entitled “Optimization of the transport of radioactive material” will examine the current situation in Europe and elsewhere in the world (contributions from AFAN\, REPROLAM and ARAN regional networks are welcome) and will share experiences of improving the so-called radiation protection culture in these areas through the analysis of case studies and feedback experiences. At the end of the presentation sessions and work in small groups organized on this occasion\, the participants will try to put forward a set of recommendations on optimizing radiation protection in the field of transport. \nThe workshop will take place in Petten (The Netherlands) from 23 to 25 April 2025.
