DESCRIPTION:11th International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities in Ionising Radiation Research\n(RICOMET 2026)\, a meeting for social sciences and humanities (SSH) communities engaging with ionising radiation across disciplines and societal contexts. \n Date: 23–25 September 2026\n Venue: Czech Academy of Sciences\, Prague\n❗ Abstract submission deadline – March 15th 2026 \nAs nuclear and radiation-related technologies rapidly evolve\, RICOMET2026 seeks SSH research that questions\, illuminates\, and informs these changes. Key themes include:\n✔️ Growing global attention to nuclear energy\, including emerging nuclear technologies and small modular reactors\n✔️ The climate crisis and its implications for energy systems\, risk governance\, and intergenerational responsibilities\n✔️ Increasing calls for the efficient use of resources and sustainability in dealing with nuclear development\, long-term environmental pollution\, contamination and waste legacies\n✔️ The economics of nuclear power plants\, including small modular reactors and their strategic aspects\n✔️ Social processes around radioactive waste management and disposal\n✔️ Expanded use of ionizing radiation in health care and the associated ethical\, social\, organizational\, communicational and technological challenges\n✔️ Shifting geo-political dynamics and emerging security concerns\n✔️ Uncertain futures\, technological promises\, and public imaginaries of radiation-related innovation. \nOther themes are also welcome!\nWe invite contributions from all SSH backgrounds and encourage early career researchers (ECRs) to participate. DESCRIPTION:Topical area: occupational radiation protection of for medical professionals \n“Radiation shielding in interventional radiology: wearable lead\, devices and barriers“\nBy DMichael Katsidzira (University Hospitals Birmingham\, UK) \n  \nFor decades\, heavy lead aprons have been the standard for radiation protection in interventional labs\, contributing significantly to a high incidence of orthopaedic injuries among medical staff. This webinar explores the suite of radiation protection options\, driven by innovations that prioritize operator safety and ergonomics. We will examine the efficacy of modern\, non-wearable solutions\, including ceiling-suspended shielding systems\, radiation protection cabins\, and robotic-assisted platforms that remove the operator from the radiation field entirely. Additionally\, we will discuss the role of lightweight\, lead-alternative composite materials and radiation protection culture. The session will conclude by comparing these technologies\, highlighting how combining various types of protection is creating a safer\, more sustainable career path for interventional specialists. \nLearning Objectives \nAfter following this webinar\, participants will be able to \nDescribe the Occupational Risks: Articulate the primary ergonomic and health hazards\, specifically orthopaedic injuries\, associated with the long-term use of traditional lead aprons in interventional labs. \nIdentify Key Technologies: Identify and differentiate between the major categories of modern radiation protection technologies\, including lead-alternative composite materials\, structural shielding systems (suspended and cabin-based)\, and robotic-assisted platforms. \nExplain Protective Mechanisms: Explain the mechanism of action for non-wearable shielding systems and how they effectively reduce operator radiation dose without imposing physical strain. \nCompare and Contrast Solutions: Compare the advantages and disadvantages of various “lead-free” solutions\, considering factors such as radiation protection efficacy\, operator mobility\, capital cost\, and impact on procedural workflow. \nEvaluate for Implementation: Evaluate the critical factors a clinical department should consider when developing a strategy to improve radiation protection\, ensuring a comprehensive approach to radiation safety. \n  \nAnnouncement flyer will become available on the IRPA website. \nRegistration \n
